  1. How a Self-Sealing Screw Works

Founded in 1947, APM Hexseal has provided environmental sealing solutions for over 70 years. We offer a wide range of innovative sealing products for use in industrial and commercial applications. Unlike traditional fasteners, they serve a dual purpose: joining components together and sealing contaminants in/out.

One of our core offerings is self-sealing screws. In this blog post, we provide an overview of these products, highlighting what they are, how they work, and what applications they are used in.

APM Hexseal Seelskrews & SeelboltsWhat Is a Self-Sealing Screw?

In many industrial and commercial operations, fasteners are exposed to extreme conditions (e.g., impact or vibration) that may compromise the integrity of the hardware or the assembly. Self-sealing screws—such as our Seelskrew® products—are engineered to serve as a solution to these problems, creating strong joints and seals that hold up to use in even the most demanding environments. They offer the following advantages over traditional fastening and sealing solutions:

    • Easier installation. Self-sealing screws form reliable and reusable seals without the need for the application of a separate gasket or sealing compound.
    • Better vibration resistance. Self-sealing screws are vibration-resistant, which allows them to withstand normal jarring and repetitive motion. If a higher degree of vibration resistance is required, APM Hexseal offers fastener solutions with additional locking features, such as self-locking pellets, strips, and patches.
    • Broader option range. Seelskrews come in a variety of standard thread sizes and with various O-ring elastomer options. Other customizations include specialty thread-forming variations, tamper-resistant drives, thread captivation, and paint and finish options.

How Does a Self-Sealing Screw Work?

Self-sealing screws are ideal for applications where prevention of unintentional fluid flow is critical. They have built-in O-rings that form tight seals once the fastener is fully installed. The seals keep contaminants, such as air, dust, lubricants, water, or other gases and liquids, from leaking into or out of sealed areas within a device or system.

    Applications for Self-Sealing Screws

At APM Hexseal, we are committed to providing high-quality sealing solutions for every customer application. Our high-tech sealing products are available with FDA-approved silicone upon request for use in sensitive applications (e.g., medical and pharmaceutical equipment). Our experts will also offer personalized recommendations based on panel characteristics, clearance holes, and other variables related to the customer’s unique application and customize the final product as per their fastening and sealing requirements and restrictions.

While our Seelskrews are well-suited for outdoor and underwater applications, they can be tailored for use in many other industrial and commercial applications, including:

  2. A Guide to O-Ring Material Selection

O-rings play a vital role in sealing fasteners. Sealing fasteners are hardware devices (e.g., sealing bolts, sealing screws, and sealing nuts) used to mechanically join two or more components together. They also form seals at the fastening point that prevent unwanted ingress or egress of materials. They have built-in O-rings, which create a tight hermetic seal once the fastening element is fully installed.

The O-ring element in a sealing fastener can be made from a variety of materials depending on the intended application. It is important to choose the O-ring material carefully since the wrong material can result in the formation of an insufficient seal. This can negatively affect the integrity of process materials and/or the performance of equipment.

The following article serves as a guide to O-ring material selection. It covers what to consider when vetting your options, what material options are available, and what benefits a properly designed sealing fastener may offer.

Assorted O RingsKey Selection Considerations for O-Ring Materials

Elastomers are available in many formulations, each of which exhibits unique characteristics that make it suitable for particular applications. Knowing the differences between each elastomer is key to identifying the one that is best suited for your sealing fasteners’ O-rings. Some of the considerations to keep in mind when vetting the material options available include:

    • Where and how will the sealing fastener be used?
    • What types of contaminants may be present in the application environment?
    • What temperature conditions will the sealing fastener encounter?
    • Does the application involve normal or demanding conditions (e.g., coarse surfaces, repeated actuation, sharp objects)?
    • How small or large is the budget compared to the cost of failure?

    Types of O-Ring Materials

O-rings can be formed from a broad selection of materials to suit different environments and applications. Some of the most commonly used materials are:

    • Fluorosilicone. This material can withstand exposure to chemicals, ozone, petroleum, and soap, which is why it is often used in applications where exposure to fuel and oil is likely. It is also suitable for use in extreme temperatures, so it can be used in many geographic locations.
    • Silicone. This material is highly resistant to damage and degradation caused by dust, ozone, salt spray, soap, weather, and other harsh conditions and compounds. As such, it is widely used for outdoor applications. However, it is also utilized for various other industrial processes and environments.
    • Neoprene. This material offers relatively low compression set requirements. Additionally, it is used in a variety of industries for its resilience and toughness.
    • Buna-N. This material exhibits high strength, low compression set, and excellent resistance to abrasion and petroleum. For these reasons, it finds application in a range of industries, from automotive to oil drilling.

Applications and Benefits of O-Rings and Sealing Fasteners

O-rings are essential components of many industrial and commercial applications. As part of sealing fasteners, they help keep critical process materials in and potential contaminants out. Typical industries that use them include:

    • Aerospace
    • Agriculture
    • Construction
    • Defense
    • Electronics
    • Food & Beverage
    • Industrial
    • Infrastructure
    • Lighting
    • Marine
    • Medical
    • Power Generation

Sealing fasteners that are properly engineered, selected, and installed can offer a number of advantages over traditional fastening and sealing solutions, such as:

    • Better corrosion resistance. Sealing fasteners are generally made from corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel or zinc-coated steel.
    • Greater durability. The elastomeric materials used for the sealing elements will not break down when exposed to demanding conditions over time, so the fasteners can be used in harsh environments without losing integrity or becoming brittle.
    • Broader versatility. Sealing fasteners offer protection against moisture and many other contaminants, making them suitable for a range of sealing applications across the industrial, commercial, and consumer sectors.
    • Easier installation. The installation requirements for sealing fasteners are much less complex and intense than traditional fastening and sealing solutions.
    • Lower cost of ownership. Sealing fasteners can be removed and reused, which makes them perfect for temporary fastening applications. However, they also offer excellent long-term performance in permanent fastening applications, which reduces maintenance and replacement costs.

One type of sealing fasteners is sealing screws—also known as self-sealing O-ring screws. Compared to standard screws, APM Hexseal sealing screws have the following advantages:

    • They require a total compression of less than 20% of their original size when torqued.
    • They are available with anti-vibration and anti-movement features that lock them in place even when exposed to high noise and vibration levels, which protects the O-ring from damage caused by wear and tear.
    • They come pre-assembled, so they are ready to install out of the package.

  3. Guide to Sealing Fasteners

Fasteners such as screws, bolts, nuts, and nails provide connections for critical components and disparate substrates across industries. Sealing fasteners go a step further by tightly sealing against the substrate, making them particularly for high-value and high-intensity situations. Today, we want to take a closer look at sealing fasteners – what they are, how they work, and why they’re so crucial.

    Sealing FastenersWhat are Sealing Fasteners?

A sealing fastener features an elastomer molded or built into the hardware, eliminating the need for messy pastes or liquid sealants. The built-in O-ring is often made of silicone or rubber, but manufacturers sometimes use other materials like nitrile, neoprene, or EPDM. The purpose of the O-ring is to provide a tight hermetic seal once the fastener is installed.

As an operator applies torque to tighten the fastener, the O-ring expands to fill in any gaps between the fastener and the surface. Numerous highly specialized sealing fasteners exist, including nuts, bolts, screws, and washers, among others.

    Sealing Fastener Capabilities

A sealing fastener creates a much tighter seal than what is possible with a standard fastener. This seal prevents contaminants like dust, oil, or other liquids from seeping in or out. This capability makes sealing fasteners ideal for sterile environments and operations containing toxic materials and pollution.

The O-ring also provides a better grip for the fastener, ensuring that it doesn’t come loose over time. A quality sealing fastener holds true even in high-pressure settings, such as deep underwater or within heavy machinery pressure valves. Overall, a good sealing fastener should feature good resistances to chemicals, water, temperature shifts, and vibrations, which makes them far superior to traditional fastening hardware.

    Benefits of Using Sealing Fasteners

Sealing fasteners offer an array of advantages, such as:

    • Corrosion resistance Sealing fasteners get made from corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless or zinc-coated steel.
    • Durability. The elastomers used to create sealing fasteners won’t break down over time. These fasteners can withstand extreme temperature conditions, ozone, and other harsh environmental factors without becoming brittle or losing integrity.
    • Versatility. Because sealing fasteners protect against the intrusion of moisture and contaminants, they tend to work well in a wide array of commercial, industrial, and consumer applications.
    • Saving time. The self-sealing capabilities of sealing fasteners simplify the installation process and help installers to save time.
    • Lower cost of ownership. Sealing fasteners can typically be removed and reused, making them ideal for temporary projects. They also last longer in permanent installations, minimizing maintenance and replacement costs.

    Applications for Sealing Fasteners

Numerous industries benefit from self-sealing fasteners, including:

    • Aerospace
    • Agriculture
    • Construction
    • Defense
    • Electronics
    • Food and beverage
    • Industrial
    • Infrastructure
    • Lighting
    • Marine

    Women's History Month

What Does it Mean to Be an Icon?

    Riva Morse

Such an interesting term, used to describe many people and many things but what does it truly signify?

In layman’s terms, icon means idol, standout, pinnacle – the essence of greatness in a category. Icons can come from anywhere or from any walk of life.  It is their unparalleled success or excellence that awards them the status of icon. What is usually fascinating about icons is their journey, their history, their “how I got here” story.  There is always a definitive uniqueness to their spirit and character that clarifies the why that was the impetus for the how. Once you understand the innate qualities that would allow no outcome other than success, the story of the journey all makes perfect sense.

Celebrating APM Hexseal’s Icon, Riva Morse

    Riva Morse

APM Hexseal has had our share of Icons. In recognition of International Women’s month, we celebrate and honor the life of our co-founder and matriarch of the business, Riva Solins Morse, who passed away in January of 2018, at almost 101 years old.  APM Hexseal was founded more than 70 years ago by Riva and her inventor husband, Milton Morse.  Milton was the genius in the lab and Riva was the sales engine. Driven and dynamic, her tireless efforts launched what would become a pioneer in the industry.  70 years ago, having women in the tech sector was not only uncommon, in an executive position it was unheard of.  A mighty force of nature, Riva worked side by side with Milton and developed the framework of the sales channel that still exists at APM Hexseal today.  She was the genius behind the genius and is equally responsible, with Milton, for the long and successful history that APM Hexseal has enjoyed.

Up until a month before she passed, Riva would still come in from time to time.  She would walk through the office, wave to the people and spend a bit of time visiting.  Smaller in stature but not at all diminished in status, she still radiated the smart, sassy and devoted woman who literally built the company.  We miss seeing her but take solace in knowing that she is up there somewhere, an ethereal guiding hand for APM Hexseal. We honor her by continuing her tradition of the drive toward excellence, dedication and accepting no outcome other than success.   On the wall in her office still hangs one of her favorite paintings… a Manet.  Another Icon.

    Community ServiceOur Recent Community Efforts

The APM Hexseal team has been pleased to help out a number of local organizations in recent months. Here are the highlights:

A Food Pantry in Englewood, New Jersey

During the pandemic, a food pantry in Englewood, NJ went from helping 400 families weekly to about 1,000 families per week. Our employees set to the task of hosting a Thanksgiving drive to gather food and monetary donations.  At the conclusion of the drive, we had collected an entire  pallet of food and, with APM Hexseal matching all monetary donations,  we gave the food pantry $2,500 in cash and supermarket gift cards.

    Local Schools

When APM Hexseal learned that local school districts were having trouble obtaining the personal protective equipment and supplies they needed to keep students and faculty safe, we knew we had to find a way to make it safer for students and teachers to be in the classroom. We sourced, purchased, and donated masks, sanitizing wipes, and hand sanitizer to three underfunded New Jersey school districts in Mount Olive, Newark, and Paterson.

Senior Residence at St. Peter the Apostle

Senior citizens comprise one of the highest risk groups for COVID-19.  In order to help safeguard this segment of the population, most senior residences have tight restrictions on allowing in person visits with family and loved ones.  This has made the pandemic especially hard on our aging population – both physically and mentally.  In order to help facilitate much needed visitations with their loved ones, we donated PPE and supplies to the St. Peter the Apostle Senior Residence in River Edge, New Jersey, so that they can spend time with their friends and family, safely.

Happy Thanksgiving from APM HexsealAPM Hexseal has a lot to be thankful for, this holiday season.  Although the year has indeed been a very challenging one, APM Hexseal has survived and thrived.  Throughout the pandemic, we have remained fully operational. We made numerous adjustments to our staff schedule and plant operations, to create a safe and functional operational atmosphere for all our employees.

Safety was our top priority and we worked very hard to ensure that we could continue to produce our products, while maintaining a safe working environment for our people.  As an essential business, we supply components that are utilized in ventilators, hospital beds and a plethora of other medical and emergency services equipment.  Shutting down would cause great harm to our customers and the community at large, so we have worked tirelessly to avoid that. Our employees committed themselves to working through some difficult functional situations and rose to every challenge put before them. We are so thankful to them and proud of their extraordinary efforts. We created and tweaked our COVID-19 plan along the way and now feel quite comfortable being able to continue operations during the current resurgence we are seeing.

One of the strategically intelligent things we did, early on, was to apply to the SBA for a PPP loan.  We were approved and we utilized that money to cover our payroll and keep from having to reduce our workforce by even one person.  Applying for this loan was a tedious and detailed process and we were deeply grateful to have received the loan, which allowed us to continue operating.  The funds were used for exactly their intended purpose, our employees are all still here as a result and APM Hexseal remains a strong, solvent, and vibrant entity. In fact, not only will we maintain our staff, but we will be able to add to our headcount in 2021.

We have recently been notified that, after careful scrutiny and evaluation by the SBA, we satisfied all the requirements for utilization of the funds and as a result, the loan has been fully forgiven. We are very grateful to the SBA for their assistance and very proud of this achievement. The hard work that our entire staff has put forth in order to keep our lines running has been acknowledged and recognized by many of our customers.

Our employees have now paid it forward by holding a Thanksgiving food drive for our local food pantry here in Englewood, NJ.  Giving back to our community has always been one of the foundational values of the APM Hexseal family and this year, more than ever, it has become increasingly important to us.  To that end, our employees collected food and monetary donations and the company has provided matching funds.  This year, our local food pantry received the largest amount of much needed food and money that we have ever collected, and we could not be happier to be able to help.

We are all in this together, and together we will survive and become stronger.  APM Hexseal would like to thank all our customers, suppliers, partners and friends for your dedicated support and loyalty. We are mindful that there continue to be struggles but we are hopeful for good things in the future. From our APM Hexseal family, a very Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving, to all.

    Silicone Rubber

This type of rubber is composed of silicone, a type of polymer formed by combining the metalloid silicon with methyl chloride. These polymers are resistant to extreme temperatures and are available as solids, liquids, pastes, and greases. Due to the fact that they are non-toxic and odorless, silicones have become a popular and safe sealant option for medical devices and food-grade products.

One of the significant attractions offered by silicone rubber is its immense versatility. Depending on its formulation, this material can display characteristics of both organic and inorganic materials. Unlike many other options, silicone elastomers retain their flexibility even in extremely low temperatures.

    Other silicone rubber properties include:

    • Noise reduction
    • Tensile strength
    • Thermal stability
    • Vibration dampening
    • Weather resistance
    • Chemical resistance

Benefits of Silicone Rubber Sealing Solutions

Silicone rubber boasts a wide range of advantages as a sealing solution.

    Thermal Stability

This material maintains consistent properties at extreme high and low temperatures. Its ability to retain its elasticity in high heat and extreme cold makes it an ideal choice for components used across a variety of harsh environment types. Silicone rubber has a temperature range of approximately -100°F to 500°F, and it will hold up to frequent usage at 300°F without experiencing any changes in its properties. It can also often maintain its properties under exposure to temperatures up to 600°F for brief periods of time.
